History time
Fireworks hold a fascination for people of all ages across the world. They are a product of pyrotechnics that are built with a fuse which can be lit to cause an explosion. They could be noisy or just give out colourful sparks and are used for display or to scare away bird pests from fields. They vary in size from small hand held ones to large rocket sized ones that need huge launchers.
The history of fireworks goes back two thousand years, when the Chinese discovered that green bamboo explodes in an open fire. Later, Chinese alchemists came across chemicals which when combined burned brightly. Sulphur, Potassium nitrate, arsenic and honey mixed in a certain proportion was inserted into green bamboo to cause vivid explosions. The fireworks industry of China was highly developed by 1200. Later the concept of fireworks was adapted for warfare using gunpowder.
October 31st evening and night, Halloween, every year is a time for children to dress up in scary outfits resembling skeletons and ghosts. They then go to their neighbourhood homes calling “Trick or treat”. They are then given goodies like sweets, candies and chocolates. The present day Halloween is an evolved version from how it started. The History of Halloween runs back several centuries, when the Celtic people of Western Europe believed that during the period (end of October), the kingdoms of ghosts and the living are thrown open to each other. Halloween is said to have started as a means to protect the living from the ghosts.
